Mark Smallridge Resume
Background
Mark Smallridge has more than thirty years of experience in civil engineering analysis and design, and has specialized in pavement related work. After graduating in 1981, he commenced his
career with Nigel Nixon and Partners in the United Kingdom, and worked on a wide variety of domestic and international projects. During this period he was involved in the development of
pavement design methods for port operations and for segmental paving systems. He was a resident engineer on industrial and civic paving projects, and has acted as owner’s representative.
He also undertook forensic investigation of pavement failures and has served as an expert witness.
He transferred to Dallas in 1994 to take over management of the US office of Nigel Nixon and Partners, Inc. In 1999 Mark Smallridge and Associates, Inc. was incorporated with Mark as President. Since that time he has undertaken the design of pavements for ports, airports and rail yards as well as for many commercial, institutional, civic and private projects.
Education/Qualifications
Mark obtained his first degree, B.Sc., Civil Engineering, at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He is a Chartered Engineer in the UK and a licensed Professional Engineer in TX. He is
a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society for Professional Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Relevant Experience
Mark has extensive experience with various paving materials and paving systems. For industrial and commercial applications these traditionally include asphalt and portland cement concrete as
well as less frequently utilized materials such as unit pavers, roller compacted concrete, stabilization and recycling. In civic and public applications he has undertaken projects designed with
natural stone slabs, clay and concrete pavers, granite setts, ceramic tile and various decorative concrete finishes. Several of these projects have incorporated paving on top of structures with
waterproofing and insulation layers.
Mark has undertaken appraisal and design work for airport pavements at Dallas, New York, Dulles, Sacramento and Buffalo Airports. He has undertaken port paving analysis and design projects for the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach, the Port of Vancouver, the Port of Houston, The Port of New Orleans and the Port of New York and New Jersey. Intermodal rail yard pavements have been analyzed and designed for Burlington Northern, Conrail and Union Pacific.
Mark has also worked in conjunction with architects and landscape architects on the design, detailing and specification for many private and public projects. These include the Gateway Center in Los Angeles, Queensway Bay Harbor in Long Beach, the National Sculpture Garden in Washington DC, Battery Park in New York, McKinney Avenue in Dallas, Nationwide Arena District in Columbus, Nasher Sculpture Garden in Dallas, Columbus Circle in New York and Independence Park in Philadelphia. He has assisted with master plan development and participated in several projects on university campuses including USC, Penn State, Tulane, UCSF, Stanford, Yale, Wesleyan, SMU, Texas and UCLA.
Mark has also advised clients in regard to pavement failures and undertaken investigations thereof. He has served as an expert witness in relation to some of these projects. These have included both heavy and light duty pavement failures in the United States and Internationally. These have included projects in Seattle, Oakland, San Francisco, Salem, Long Beach, Kalamazoo, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Brisbane and Sydney.
Publications
Mark has authored several technical papers on pavement engineering and subgrade improvement. These have been presented at such forums as the ASCE Airfield Pavement Committee annual conference,
the ASCE Ports Committee annual conference and various AAPA and SEPT conferences. He has also published articles in several periodicals.
