Pavement Design Services

Mark Smallridge and Associates has over 30 years’ experience in the design, and implementation of paving projects in the public and private sectors. Projects range from light-duty private driveways and municipal public spaces to heavy-duty ports, rail yards and airports. We have worked with the design team on conceptual and feasibility studies and at schematic design, design development, and construction document stages on numerous occasions where the pavement may be the major part of the work, or forms a smaller part of a complex project. We can also continue our services through bidding, pre-construction and construction phases of the project. We offer a flexible service to suit your requirements.

At schematic design stage, we can advise you on the merits of different paving materials and on the paving system that achieves the best fit with your vision. Whether its unit pavers in stone, clay, and concrete, or whether its monolithic paving in concrete and asphalt, we have the experience to help you meet your design objectives. We understand that pavements have to withstand static and dynamic loads as well as exposure to the elements and maintenance procedures, and will accommodate these issues in our assessment.

At design development stage, we can design the pavement section to accommodate the traffic loading, substrate properties, environmental conditions and service requirements and advise on life cycle costing. The opportunities for adopting sustainable solutions such as permeable paving and recycled materials can be explored. We are well versed in recycling solutions such as bituminous and hydraulically bound crushed concrete, milled asphalt, and other secondary aggregate and byproduct materials.

You may wish us to prepare details and specifications for the project at construction documents stage, or require limited input on particular aspects of the pavement. We use the latest computer aided design and analysis techniques as well as our experience from other projects to ensure long-term durability, serviceability, and performance are maintained throughout the pavement’s life.

During the pre-construction and construction stages of the project, we can continue to work with the design and construction teams to provide technical oversight, respond to RFIs and submittals or address constructability issues.
